About breed origins: dog breeds often developed across borders and changed over generations. This map uses commonly cited locations associated with the development of the modern breed, not a claim about every breed’s ancient ancestry. The background map is bundled directly with the theme and uses English-only geographic labels added by Does A Dog Know. No external map tile API key is required.

Why origins matter

Breed history helps explain behavior.

Many breed traits make more sense when you know the jobs people selected those dogs to do: herd, retrieve, guard, hunt, pull, track, or simply keep us company. Breed histories can cross modern borders, so the map focuses on commonly cited regions of modern development.
