Dogs build expectations by connecting sounds, scents, places, people, and routines with what happens next. That makes them excellent at predicting familiar events even when they do not understand the situation in the same abstract way a person would.
What should you look for?
The most useful clue is consistency. If the same cue repeatedly predicts the same outcome, your dog can learn that association very quickly. Changes in routine, context, or environment can make the response look less reliable without meaning the dog has forgotten everything.
Watch what happens before and after the behavior. A dog who responds only in one room or at one time of day may be using context as much as the specific word or signal you notice.
