What is probably going on?

Dog intelligence is not one single skill. Memory, social learning, scent work, problem-solving, inhibition, navigation, and understanding human cues can all vary independently. A dog that struggles with one puzzle can still be exceptionally skilled in another area.

What should you look for?

Training and experience also matter. Repetition strengthens associations, while sleep, stress, distraction, age, and motivation can change performance from one day to the next. That is why one failed attempt is not a useful intelligence test.

When you are testing what your dog remembers or understands, keep the task simple, control distractions, and repeat it across several sessions before drawing a conclusion.

What this means for you

Use the answer to how long is a dog's memory as a starting point, not a label for every dog. Compare the behavior with your dog’s normal routine, temperament, recent experiences, and the situation in which it happens. When the pattern is relaxed and predictable, it is usually most useful to respond calmly and consistently.

Evidence & sources

Evidence note: Canine cognition studies show what dogs can learn, remember, and discriminate under specific conditions. Individual dogs vary, and a laboratory finding does not mean every dog will behave the same way.
